The Bet365 Gold Cup is a Class 1, Grade 3 steeple-chase run at Sandown Park racecourse over a distance of 3m 5 ½f with the horses taking on twenty-four fences before crossing the finishing line.  Run as a handicap, the Bet365 Gold Cup Chase is open to horses aged four and above.
Sandown’s Bet365 Gold Cup was first run in 1957; the winner that year being the Neville Crump trained Much Obliged ridden by Johnny East.  Originally sponsored by the Whitbread brewery, whose chairman Bill Whitbread had twice ridden in Aintree’s Grand National, the Whitbread Gold Cup – as it was originally known – was the first commercial sponsorship of a British sporting event and was its most enduring until it ended in 2001.  After Whitbread’s involvement ceased At The Races (2002 & 2003) and Betfred (2004 – 2007) sponsored the race until Bet365 took over sponsorship of Sandown’s Gold Cup in 2008.

Having entered into a commercial arrangement seven months after Whitbread, Hennessy’s continuing sponsorship of the Newbury Gold Cup, the Hennessy Gold Cup, now makes Hennessy the longest-running sponsor of a British race.

The Bet365 Gold Cup meeting in late April each year features both jumps and flat races and includes competitive listed and top grade races – the National Hunt races being referred to as “Graded” races whilst their counterparts on the flat being know as “Group” races – including:

• The Bet365.com Hurdle Race – Listed Race
• The Bet365.com Celebration Steeple Chase – Grade 2
• The Bet365 Gold Cup Steeple Chase (Handicap) – Grade 3
• The Bet365 Mile – Group 2
• The Bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes – Group 3

The most successful horses in Sandown’s Gold Cup steeple-chase are:

• Larbawn – winner of back-to-back victories in the Whitbread Gold Cup 1968 & 1969;
• Diamond Edge – winner of the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1979 & 1981;
• Topsham Bay – winner of back-to-back victories in the Whitbread Gold Cup 1992 & 1993; and
• Ad Hoc – winner of the Whitbread Gold Cup 2001 & winner of the At The Races Gold Cup 2003.

The leading jockey in this race is Ron Barry who won aboard the Gordon Richards trained Titus Oates in the Whitbread Gold Cup 1971 and aboard the The Dikler in the 1974 running of the race.  Barry also won aboard Charlie Potheen in 1973 when the Whitbread Gold Cup was run at Newcastle rather than Sandown Park over the slightly longer distance of 3m 6f.

Fulke Walyn has trained seven winners of the Bet365 Gold Cup – Taxidermist (1958), Mill House (1967), Charlie Potheen (1973), the Dikler (1974), Diamond Edge (1979 & 1981) and Special Cargo (1984).   Walyn’s the Dikler had finished second in the Whitbread Gold Cup 1974 but Proud Tarquin which had finished first in the race was subsequently disqualified.  Cahervillahow along with Givuas a Buck were also disqualified in 1991 and 1992 respectively and the races awarded to Docklands Express and Topsham Bay ridden by Richard Dunwoody.

Eighteen went to post in the Bet354 Gold Cup 2011  with the Ferdy Murphy trained Poker De Sivola, ridden by Timmy Murphy, came home by two and a quarter lengths from David Pipe’s Faasel.  The Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Baby Run, the 6/1 starting price favourite, ridden by son Sam Twiston-Davies was third.
